New gliding competition format

The aim of the club’s mid-week gliding competition is to encourage as many to take part with whatever glider they have under a 2.5m wingspan. After a lot of debate the club has introduced a new competition format in order to make the competition more open. Previously it was based on a twenty second power climb to altitude with a maximum altitude of 900 feet, which meant that the competition was biased to those that could climb the fastest in the twenty seconds allowed.

Thursday, 23rd June the first new format competition was held whereby height limiters were introduced bringing the competition substantially in-line with the BMFA’s competition rules. Our competition now uses limiters that cut the motor at either 150m or after a 30 second motor run, whichever comes first. The result was very encouraging and all that took part thought the competition was more open and fairer.
